Top 10 Yoga Retreats in India

I’m sure like me, when you think of a yoga retreat, India pops into your head, which is natural, because that’s where it all began. I’d often wondered what the word ‘yoga’ meant.  Well, as it turns out, the word ‘yoga’ originates from ‘yuj’ in Sanskrit, which means to unite, and here it means to unite with the spirit of the universe. Yoga is the way to achieve that union. It is a practice that involves the mind, body and spirit.

Yoga by the sea

Yoga dates way back to the Indus Valley Civilization where archaeological digs evidence the practice of yoga. But now, India offers you various forms and schools of yoga. However, I’d like to focus on a few basic forms.

Ashtanga Yoga: A practice that involves coordinating postures and breath to produce internal heat and a detoxifying sweat. A workout that improves your circulation, strengthens your body and calms your mind.

Pranayama: Pranayama is all about breath control. The main life force in our bodies. Pranayama teaches you to control pranic (life force) energy with the end goal of achieving a healthy body and mind.

Hatha Yoga: This is a practice that uses a series of yoga poses to align your body and opens  channels for energy to flow freely.

yogaThere has been a lot of focus on wellness in the recent years, with recommendations of detox diets and demanding workouts, among others. But by far the best way to stay well is undoubtedly through practicing yoga. For the frazzled, overworked lot, a yoga vacation is just what the doctor ordered.

Sprinkled all over the Indian sub-continent, here are some options for yoga in India:

1. Ananda in the Himalayas

Ananda Spa is considered one of the most exclusive spa destinations in the world. Set in the mesmerizing surroundings of the Himalayan mountains in Northern India, you are transported into a world of pure air, clear water and the refreshing fragrance of the trees and flowers in this beautiful property. I can’t think of a more perfect place for a Yoga retreat. Taught in its purest form, hatha yoga is practiced in the style of the Bihar School of Yoga. Yoga teachers customize programs to suit individual needs that could incorporate other forms of yoga too.

I’ll let the website carry you into this exclusive place.
